Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures won a Newbery Medal soon after its publication. Honestly, I don't understand why. The story is amusing at times, and the characters have enough character development to be interesting. The…

Weird. Unreal. Quirky. Funny. Sad. Deep. Lovable. Worth reading!

A fun, silly, adventure story about a girl and a squirrel who acquires superhero abilities.

While DiCamillo’s books always deal with the theme of children (or animals in the metaphorical place of children) trying to find their places in the world, they do so in a surprising number of different writing styles. This is a comic…

I quite enjoyed this book. It was funny and quirky and I thought it was sweet. There were some eccentric characters and unexpected plots twists. I loved the goofy little squirrel, Ulysses. The story had some depth to it and touched on…

I enjoyed this book because I thought that it was pretty funny. My favourite part was when the mom took Ulysses. I enjoyed this part because it was interesting and kept me reading. The only negative feedback I have about this book is to…

Interest level: ages 8-12. Everything changes for superhero aficionado Flora when she sees a squirrel get sucked up and spit out of a neighbour’s vacuum. The squirrel, renamed Ulysses, is no longer a regular squirrel. He's is a…

Not Kate DiCamillo's most engaging book, by far, but it still has her touch. With the simplest observations, she manages to get you right in the heart when you least expect it. And as usual, she leaves you wishing you knew more about…

One of my all time favorite children's novels. Super quirky and witty, the dialogue is superb and authentic. The plot is very creative; it's something I would have imagined as a child: a squirrel who has superpowers and becomes your pet.…

I struggle to find read-aloud books with appropriate themes and a high vocabulary level for my almost 2nd grader. This book is difficult enough that she couldn't have read it on her own, but thematically is appropriate for a 7 year old.…

I didn't like the book. It was way too cutesy. Very disappointing, especially since it's a Newbery winner.

This is one quirky book. Superhero squirrels aside, the dialogue reads like a movie that is trying to be funny through soundbites, randomness, and reuse of phrases like "Holy Bagumba", "Do not hope; observe," and "Your father is capacious…

Every member of any family, including adults, will most certainly enjoy this tale. The story is an imaginative adventure involving a self-proclaimed cynic and a super hero squirrel. Through a series of "holy unanticipated…

Not a bad book, but certainly not worthy of a Newbery Medal.

Holy bagumba! Another winner from Kate. A delight to read. The characters are wonderfully quirky and the plot is outrageous yet both are true to the heart of the matter.

Charming, quirky and memorable. I'll never look at that squirrel in my yard the same way again.

This is such a fun read! I would recommend this book to all those who love wacky, well-written stories. I mean, really? A squirrel that develops superpowers after a near death experience? So awesome.
