I picked up this book on recommendation of CBC book review. It took over 100 pages to get into the story. Hope in this society is futile and graft is rife. Life is grim. People are dishonest. It is all so depressing and ending is not satisfying. Emil gets beaten, robbed, hoodwinked by his boss and solves a case for which he gets no credit. This is dismal reading.
