The fact that the enemy is not seen until the final moments of this film says a great deal about what it sets out to achieve. It's not about glory in combat, brothers in arms, or grit in the face of enemy fire: it's about standing up and continuing to fight after a colossal defeat. It's about ordinary tea-drinking and jam-on-toast eating Englishmen surviving to return home and offer the worlds best hope against the Nazis while the rest waited and hoped that it was all a bad dream. On the first viewing, I liked this film. On second and subsequent viewings I have grown to love it. The soundtrack, sense of impending doom, and visual splendor combine to produce a masterpiece depicting the struggle at sea and in the air to save those that fought on the land in the opening (and often untold) salvos of the Second World War. Watch it and you wont be disappointed!
