A pretty good, if unnecessary, remake of the classic that is a little cheesy, but better than the Peter Jackson version. It follows the basic storyline (Ape meets girl) and ends with Kong on the World Trade Center, which is eerie. Charles Grodin is good and smarmy, Jeff Bridges is always a welcome sight, and Jessica Lange, in her debut, is pretty, but a little bland and wouldn't make another movie for three years. The fx are dated, but Kong looks good. They spend too much time on the island and the natives are straight out of Edgar Rice Burroughs and you'd think the filmmakers would have been more sensitive in a post-Civil Right, post-Black Power era. And is Kong really about miscegenation? Fun.
