A great debut collection of stories built around life in Nigeria or Nigerian immigrants in the US. I really enjoyed reading and learning about a culture I wasn't familiar with. These fragments of (Nigerian) daily life focus on family and societal relationships, the gap between the rich and poor, the precarious and often powerless situation of women and children in certain circumstances. The pages of this small book are filled with hardship, grief, longing and potent emotions. Some stories are more experimental and delve into myth, magical realism and dystopia, which makes the collection more diverse and thought-provoking. As whole, Arimah's debut is raw, unsettling at times, evocative and ultimately memorable.
