This was a beautiful story. Lois Lowry tells it with detail and emotion but doesn't go into more detail about the horrors of the Holocaust than a young reader needs to know. I was struck by the way she described the Jewish family, the Rosens. She notes the contrast when they have to put on old, tattered sweaters to cross the sea, to how they were normally so well dressed and put-together. Her descriptions bring out the humanity of her characters rather than just making them statistics of the Holocaust.
