Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes turn the Riviera upside down to crack their most captivating case yet in the New York Times bestselling series that Lee Child called &;the most sustained feat of imagination in mystery fiction today.&;

It&;s summertime on the Riviera, and the Jazz Age has come to France&;s once-sleepy beaches. From their music-filled terraces, American expatriates gaze along the coastline at the lights of Monte Carlo, where fortunes are won, lost, stolen, and sometimes hidden away. When Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes arrive, they find their partnership pulled between youthful pleasures and old sins, hot sun and cool jazz, new affections and enduring loyalties.

Russell falls into easy friendship with an enthralling American couple, Sara and Gerald Murphy, whose golden life on the Riviera has begun to attract famous writers and artists&;and some of the scoundrels linked with Monte Carlo&;s underworld. The Murphy set will go on to inspire everyone from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Pablo Picasso, but in this summer of 1925, their importance for Russell lies in one of their circle&;s recent additions: the Holmeses&; former housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson, who hasn&;t been seen since she fled England under a cloud of false murder accusations.

When a beautiful young man is found dead in Mrs. Hudson&;s front room, she becomes the prime suspect in yet another murder. Russell is certain of Mrs. Hudson&;s innocence; Holmes is not. But the old woman&;s colorful past has been a source of tension between them before, and now the dangerous players who control Monte Carlo&;s gilded casinos may stop at nothing to keep the pair away from what Mrs. Hudson&;s youthful history could bring to light.

The Riviera is a place where treasure can be false, where love can destroy, and where life, as Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes will discover, can be cheap&;even when it is made of solid gold.

"Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes turn the Riviera upside-down to crack their most captivating case yet in the New York Times bestselling series that Lee Child called "the most sustained feat of imagination in mystery fiction today." It's summertime on the Riviera, where the Jazz Age is busily reinventing the holiday delights of warm days on golden sand and cool nights on terraces and dance floors. Just up the coast lies a more traditional pleasure ground: Monte Carlo, where fortunes are won, lost, stolen, and hidden away. So when Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes happen across the Cãote d'Azur in this summer of 1925, they find themselves pulled between the young and the old, hot sun and cool jazz, new friendships and old loyalties, childlike pleasures and very grownup sins.."--

I really enjoy the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes series!! They are especially wonderful via audio additions because of the marvelous work and accent of the reader. As with all mysteries, I prefer the protagonists to be solving a murder rather than involved in international intrigue. I still recommend the book and the series. Kristi & Abby Tabby

This was so good! Memorable characters, clever plot, clues and red herrings, suspects and innocents (but who is who?), risky adventure, and as always a fascinating relationship between Mary Russell and husband Sherlock Holmes. This is the 16th book in the series and I have read them all, in order of course. Described as "a novel of suspense" it certainly is that. Suspenseful in the way Mary carefully and cleverly puts two and two together while she and Holmes meet in Monaco. They are there for a little R&R, but soon run into their former housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson, is who promptly arrested for murder. That's just how this engaging novel begins, and really all you need to know is that I highly recommend you read this book.

As Russell matures, Holmes mellows, a teeny bit. Another excellent story!

This is book #16 in the intelligently written "Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes Mysteries" series. This book was absolutely fantastic! One of the things I enjoy about this series is the well researched historical content. As the mystery in this book revolved around an incident in Russian history, and I know very little of Russian history, I found it took me longer to read, as I kept stopping to educate myself by doing my own research.

Probably my second favorite reboot of Holmes next to BBC's Sherlock, the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes novels of Laurie King are always a delight, but in emphasizing the historical fiction aspect of the book while backing down on some of the more extreme suspense elements, King is at the top of her game with Riviera Gold.

Mary is ready to leave Venice, so as Holmes heads into Romania, she tags along with friends to the French Riviera, where an expat American couple have started the crazy trend of staying over the summer. Even more than Island of the Mad, King's historical setting felt both natural and fascinating. In Cap d'Antibes Russell meets Gerald and Sara Murphy along with their artist friends of the Lost Generation. In Monaco she also runs across professional beauty, Lily Langtree, and Basil Zaharoff, arms dealer.

King brings these real characters; the time between the wars; and the French Riviera, a melting pot of every kind of artist, gambler and thief, to life. Noting with a bittersweet touch that the peace, and the specialness of the time and place, cannot last.

Aside from the amazing setting and characters, Riviera Gold has an intricate, mysterious plot with good-sized dollops of danger. I was pretty sure I knew who didn't do it, but was surprised by who did! And that involves another real-life mystery solved only in the last couple of years! I won't give it away, but you'll definitely want to do some research on this one. To date, I would consider Riviera Gold as the most interesting and satisfying of the series.

This most recent in the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series finds Mary on the Riviera, attempting to investigate a murder while spending time with bohemian friends.

The one star is mostly because Laurie King is capable of so much better, so I didn't expect to be so disappointed. This one didn't hold my interest. It, jarringly, switches from first to third person and jumps around in time. Ms. King lost the voice, polish and excellent writing/story telling ability that I admired in the earlier Mary Russell books.

Every time I pick up one the Mary Russell mysteries, I imagine her as Eleanor Roosevelt. Both are strong, intelligent women and were married to challenging men. Mary Russell is married to Sherlock Holmes. She’s lot younger than he is and manages to hold her own. The latest book, Riviera Gold, follows Mary as she leaves Venice in 1925, the setting for the last mystery, on a sailboat heading for the French Riviera and Monaco. Of course, where Mary goes, ill winds will follow. This time she finds herself helping the Holmes former housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson, who has been arrested for the murder of a young man. Of course, Holmes is there, but Mary is quite capable of solving mysteries herself. I loved the further development of Clarissa Hudson into an unexpected force in her own right with a history no one know about. I recommend that readers first read The Murder of Mary Russell. One of the things I like about Laurie King’s series is her lack of reminding people what happened in previous books.
