When Harry Hole moved to Hong Kong, he thought he was escaping the traumas of his life in Oslo and his career as a detective for good. But now, the unthinkable has happened—Oleg, the boy he helped raise, has been arrested for killing a man. Harry can’t believe that Oleg is a murderer, so he returns to Oslo to hunt down the real killer.

Although he’s off the police force, he still has a case to solve that will send him into the depths of the city’s drug culture, where a shockingly deadly new street drug is gaining popularity. This most personal of investigations will force Harry to confront his past and the wrenching truth about Oleg and himself.

I love Jo Nesbo. This is his typical style, and at times you feels as if you are on a 'train track' just waiting for him to 'reveal' the killer. Up emotionally, down emotionally, up emotionally, down emotionally. I think I know what is going on, then the 180 degree turn. At one point, almost each character could be responsible for the crime. Harry's development is fun to read, a severely flawed individual. 4 out of 5 stars.

Started Nov 20, 2014, finished, Dec 10, 2014.....Took me a long time to get through this book, but not because I wasn't enjoying it. Just 450 or so pages of very small print, which made it hard to read when I was tired, which was a lot, as it is the busy pre-Christmas season. I found my reading glasses on the last few days, much better than my bifocals while reading in bed. I must pick up a few more pairs, so that I don't have to wait so long to find a pair! I now must get to know Harry Hole much better. I kind of like him! More Jo Nesbo for me coming up in the future. (Thanks to my brother-in-law Wesley, for the recommendation.)

The third of the four part series which includes Harry Hole's recovery from drugs and alcohol addictions and crimes involving his girl friend Rakel's son Oleg. These issues and crimes put him in a bind with decisions about his supervisor and his job as a policeman.

Really good read - suspenseful, characters have depth. Story set in the disturbing Oslo heroin world. Liked it as mystery and Scandinavian literature.

Nesbo delves deep into the world of drug addiction and the drug trade. As with the Leopold's Apple device from the Leopard, Nesbo this time flawlessly invents a fictional drug, described so perfectly that you are convinced that it must exist.

This is not a feel-good novel (on par with every other Scandinavian book ever written), but it is well written and though long, has a good flow. At multiple times you will think you have things figured out and then second guess yourself.

You will reread the ending 3 times to be sure your eyes didn't deceive you.

Ceme de la creme. Top of the series?

I didn't think this was as good as Nesbo's The Snowman, but I couldn't put it down.
