Bobby Big Medicine has come to drum the Grand Entry. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield has come to watch her nephew Orvil Red Feather; Orvil has taught himself Indian dance through YouTube videos, and he has come to dance in public for the very first time. Tony Loneman is a young Native American boy whose future seems destined to be as bleak as his past, and he has come to the Big Oakland Powwow with darker intentions. Tommy Orange's first novel is a wondrous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seen. There There is a multi-generational, relentlessly paced story about violence and recovery, hope and loss, identity and power, dislocation and communion, and the beauty and despair woven into the history of a nation and its people. A glorious, unforgettable debut."--

A strong debut novel. This is so well written, it's hard to believe this is a debut novel. I liked the characters. They had real issues to deal with in a real world.
Collecting stories is important for the future. People know where they've come from, they feel connected to a group, they have a feel for who they are. All this comes from listening to the stories.
Yet in this book, the people tell their stories and remain isolated. They circle each other but don't connect. Even the end of this novel is a distraction to their connection.
And yet, they don't give up and will continue to strive to do their best, whatever that is. That's the power of the story. It continues.
I will be looking for future books by Tommy Orange. His writing is strong and has a say.
