a Gothic Romance with metaphysical pretensions, Daphne du Maurier meets Virginia Woolf, a not especially compelling combination

This brilliant film which is complex and sophisticated with profound messages will not appeal to mainstream audiences. P.T. Anderson's films are uncompromising and never conventional.
The acting is superb, unwavering and riveting right up to the end.

A boring, static quirky art film. I'd expect to see this at a film art theater in SF or Berkeley with most of the patrons wearing black.

The only film that ever made me feel like I had eaten a poisonous mushroom.

Quirky, but superbly acted and engrossing. Not for those who like their movies in neat packages with labels. It does require some patience, not playing all its cards at once and sometimes confusing you as to where it's going, but well worth it in the end. As good as Day Lewis is, Lesley Manville is spectacular in a role that is as ambiguous as the movie itself. Repeated watchings will resolve many of the questions you may have first time around.

A finely crafted movie that was a little odd. Not really my cup of tea or mushroom soup

This film was intriguing - lots of subtlety, no easy answers. In taking the time to think about it afterwards, I was able to connect the dots and somehow it came together beautifully. Great acting by the major characters, but some of the minor characters were also gifted in a way you don't normally see - they made the most of their short time. All in all, it's a quirky film, set at a slow pace, not for everyone, but fully employing the potential of every character. I'm glad I saw it... twice.

Very few redeeming qualities. A disappointment.

Very disappointing!
Perhaps I expected too much from this film. Krieps was the wrong choice for this role, she didn't have the acting chops to play opposite Day Lewis and it showed. Neither a fashion film or mystery, just a poor drama. Very disappointing

A delight! Old pros DDL and Lesley Manville are truly at the top of their game. But so much of this film belongs to Vicky Krieps, the transformed plain Jane who skillfully takes the measure of DDL's cossetted character while stubbornly holding on to her own identity. A gentle film with fine acting, a subtle screenplay, and impressive cinematography.

Many interesting quotes from the film have been posted in IMDb ... thanks to the contributors. However, the film left out some good stuff from the extras that are as memorable:

From a deleted scene:

I never really like myself. I thought my shoulders were too wide. My neck was skinny like a girl. And I have no breasts. Except my hips are large than needed. My arms strong. But in his work, I became perfect. I feel just right. May be that’s how all women feel in his clothes.

Ellie wears a spring suit in a soft fog-colored wool in a subtle plaid, paired with a built-in waistcoat of straw colored lightweight herringbone wool. The lines of the cleverly cut jacket continue into the lines of the pencil-slim skirt.
===
And now it’s the turn of Alma who wears a renaissance inspired gala gown with matching evening cape rendered in smoked colored silk velvet with golden Hurd taffeta skirt and cape lining. The bodice' s front slashing details is set off with strings of graduated sead pearls and crystal accents.
====
Ingrid wears a dinner ensemble suitable for casual dinners with friends or first nights out on a tropical cruise. A romantic silk organza blouse and silk taffeta skirt, both in soft azure blue, are contrasted with black wool jersey bodice, shawl, belt and handbag. The result was an inevitable loveliness from the House of Woodcock.
