This is not your typical retrospective on ‘60s social upheaval.
This is not your typical drama of individuals on either side of the racial divide.
This is not NOTHING typical about this movie at all.
Writer/Director Kathryn Bigelow—first woman to win the director Oscar (The Hurt Locker)—has created a movie that is best described on a visceral level, as “relentless.” About three-quarters of the way through, my wife asked, “Is this going to end soon?” She wasn’t talking about the movie itself, but rather, its unflinching minute-by-minute depiction of deliberately perpetrated cruelty that altered and destroyed a number of lives one horrific night during 1967’s summertime racial violence in Detroit.
There have been other movies about horrific real-life events the last half-century, more recently, 9/11(United 93/World Trade Center); the Boston Marathon (Stronger/The Patriot) and the disastrous oil-rig fire in the Gulf of Mexico (Deepwater Horizon). This movie, recounting a particular horrific “Black Day in July” bears NO resemblance to any of those. “Motor-city madness,” indeed.
Be forewarned: There are no heroes here (and interestingly, no Oscar nominations, either.) Instead: evil sadists and the young people who somehow, in some way, managed to survived them, but remained forever scarred by them.
And—to the best of the film-maker’s ability—the true story has been truthfully told.
