Inspector Kurt Wallander begins to suspect that there is a connection between a series of crimes tormenting Sweden--the brutal murder of a taxi driver by two teenage girls, the escape of one of the culprits from police custody, the sudden death of man who drops dead at an ATM, a bizarre power blackout, and a grisly discovery at the malfunctioning power station.

Perseus Publishing
Ystad, Sweden, fall 1997. Two teenage girls brutally murder a taxi driver. Although they are quickly apprehended, one of them escapes police custody and disappears without a trace. A few days later, a man stops at an ATM during his evening walk and suddenly falls dead to the ground. Shortly thereafter, a blackout cuts power to a large swath of southern Sweden. When a serviceman arrives at the malfunctioning power substation, he makes a grisly discovery.

Inspector Kurt Wallander begins to sense a connection between all of these events and, at the same time, becomes increasingly aware of the vulnerability of our digitized society.

Great plot, great human Wallander. This book keeps you guessing, hoping, and wondering till the very end. We're far from the "super" cops of North American novels. Firewall shows real and human cops with all their fallities. A book you won't forget for quite a while

Kurt Wallander as a detective is a fresh breath in a stale, overpopulated, cliched genre. He is very unconventional and one does not necessarily need to like or empathize with the character in order to enjoy the story. The plots themselves are conjured out of nothing- a seemingly insignificant detail that blows out of proportions. But Mankell takes you on a decent ride and at the end you can't complain that you weren't entertained.
