In this thrilling and suspenseful fantasy set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Others series, an inn owner and her shape-shifting lodger find themselves enmeshed in danger and dark secrets.

Human laws do not apply in the territory controlled by the Others--vampires, shape-shifters, and even deadlier paranormal beings. And this is a fact that humans should never, ever forget....

After her divorce, Vicki DeVine took over a rustic resort near Lake Silence, in a human town that is not human controlled. Towns such as Vicki's don't have any distance from the Others, the dominant predators who rule most of the land and all of the water throughout the world. And when a place has no boundaries, you never really know what is out there watching you.

Vicki was hoping to find a new career and a new life. But when her lodger, Aggie Crowe--one of the shape-shifting Others--discovers a murdered man, Vicki finds trouble instead. The detectives want to pin the death on her, despite the evidence that nothing human could have killed the victim. As Vicki and her friends search for answers, ancient forces are roused by the disturbance in their domain. They have rules that must not be broken--and all the destructive powers of nature at their command.

Baker & Taylor

Great book. I love all Anne Bishop's The Others books with their unique take on shapeshifters and an alternate Earth.

In Lake Silence, Bishop takes the reader away from the familiar Courtyard to visit another community within the control of the Others. Vicki DeVine, runs a rustic lodge near Lake Silence. The lodge is a place for the Others to learn to safely interact with the humans in the community. When Aggie Crowe brings home an eyeball and asks Vicki to cook it in the wave-cooker (that's a microwave to the rest of us), Vicki gets pulled into a murder scene on the edge of her property and life gets much more complicated.

Although I was a little sad to see a departure from the Courtyard and it's familiar faces, it was interesting to see a cast of new characters. Like all of Bishop's books, this one is filled with rich storytelling and a biting sense of humour that makes it difficult to put down.

Reader's unfamiliar with this series would fine Lake Silence a good place to start if they are looking for a taste of the world of the Others.

While I might have wished that Bishop had tackled something new, Lake Silence was still a good read, especially if you enjoy the world of the Others. While there are huge similarities with previous books in the series, I nonetheless found this to be an engrossing read.

I can't begin to express how terribly uncreative this book is. I made it to chapter 22 and had to put it down. Between the ridiculously named Sproings, blatantly obvious love interest and a mystery that isn't a mystery...groan. And then there is the recycling of characters and places. The Jumble is essentially the Courtyard at a different location. Bookstore being main hub, confused Others trying but not caring to understand humans. It's so formulaic (like the last few Others books) it could be a VC Andrews novel. A quick read if you don't want to think but if you are looking for something with a little more meat try Kelly Armstrong, Kim Harrison, Rachel Caine or Laurell K Hamilton.

New characters. New places. Same whimsy and humour. No previous experience with the world required. Good entrypoint to The World of the Others series.

Awesome plucky heroine who manages panic attacks but doesn't bat an eye about forces of nature padding through her home. I really enjoyed this and hope there are many more stories ahead.

If you haven't read Anne Bishop's "The Others" series, I encourage you to do so and in order! I'm very excited for this new line of books from Ms. Bishop.
