Book News
While this accessible two-volume reference for students and general readers covers both the 20th and 21st centuries, its emphasis is on ethnic conflicts during the past 60 years. The introduction provides an overview of the increase in multinational states and the impact of the age of globalization and mass migration. This is followed by alphabetical country chapters; country cases have been chosen for measures of severity such as the length of the conflict, the level of violence, and the impact of the conflict on the country’s political process. Each country chapter begins with a detailed timeline from early times to the present, then provides historical background and discussion of the issues of the conflict, management of the conflict in recent times, and the significance and impact of the conflict in the country and region. Entries close with appendixes of contemporary documents such as peace accords, agreements, and constitutions. Volume 1 covers 23 countries. In Volume 2, four chapters are devoted to ethnic conflicts in the Middle East, and five chapters are devoted to the UK. There are four chapters on US conflicts related to indigenous peoples, racial violence, civil rights, and the US relationship with Puerto Rico. Volume 2 also contains eight other country chapters.
