Horrible. All the characters are perverse and evil.

Interesting, provocative, disturbing. Many actresses likely shunned the role because it does play to men's fantasies and misconceptions about women and rape. The claim that the film is about female empowerment is as unconvincing as the protagonist is in the position of head of a video game company. Also, let's not forget that the novelist, the screen writer, the director, and the producer are all men. Meanwhile, the director let's himself off the hook by suggesting that he doesn't know what the film is, and that it may be a complete fantasy. Having said all that, I rated the film highly because it is provocative and generally well made despite some distracting inconsistencies -- For example, why does the baby change colour? Overall, the film is a fine example of male perspective and male storytelling :) Finally, the lead actress, Isabelle Huppert, was interviewed in 2017 by Charlie Rose, who seemed quite enamoured by her -- just sayin'.

Isabelle Huppert plays a daughter of a mass murderer and the victim of a rapist. I suppose that these two types of actions could result in a lot of demented characters. I admit that the sequence of events are kinda' weird. Huppert won the Golden Globe for best actress and was Oscar nominated for best actress. I suspect that she is the most prolific French actress still working.

The movie is a thriller by being weird. Whatever action, either criminal or sexual, it is deviant. Characters in the movie are like those in video games, a reflection of evil fantasies.

The history and talent of Huppert is the only value that carries this movie.

Once again, the viewer is asked to accept misogyny and the violent rape of a woman as campy art-house and thrilling. In this, almost every female character is depicted as grotesque in some way, incapable of love, or of being loved. While the violent rape scene gets mirrored by an equally vile video game, the plot insinuates a victim (non-reactive to her injuries), fanatasizing and plotting for more of the same. None of this is thrilling or complex, just rubbish. Besides that we also have to endure banal conversation, lacking in intelligence.

Have to admit that for some to me unknown reason this film "got me". It had its speed, mystery and tore me apart for whether to like or dislike the main character. It was disturbing and yet fascinating film. Isabelle Huppert excelled in her role.
I could not help to judge the main character for she lacked emotions, morals, was cold and arrogant. On the other hand I was fascinated by her indifference to pain and suffering and her strength.
I think it was very well done psychological film and worth watching.

" You’ve never seen a rape-revenge fantasy quite like “Elle,” not least because the rape, revenge and fantasy components of that subgenre have never been quite so fascinatingly disarranged. Knowingly incendiary but remarkably cool-headed, and built around yet another of Isabelle Huppert’s staggering psychological dissections, Paul Verhoeven’s long-awaited return to notional genre filmmaking pulls off a breathtaking bait-and-switch: Audiences arriving for a lurid slab of arthouse exploitation will be taken off-guard by the complex, compassionate, often corrosively funny examination of unconventional desires that awaits them. "- Guy Lodge.

Huppert is superb as usual. Complex character and intriguing plot.

I thought the interaction of all the people was well done. It was a different way of looking at such an incident but you also needed the background info to get a bit more understanding as to why things were to some point that way. They always say it is someone you know and the words at the end of one character was a surprise (someone who moved away). I think that such things are quiet possible but most think of movies and regular plots, this one was just different but good.

I'd heard the raves. I'd read about the awards. I planned a dinner-and-a-movie party around Elle. I was looking forward to it. The food was amaze-balls, the company terrific, and the movie left us perplexed. We hypothesized theories but in the end, we didn't care and were left lackluster.

I'm glad so many viewers found it worthy of five stars. I, on the other hand, want that time back! With so many movies I can't keep up with, this one did nothing for me and I didn't see its point.
