"Secrets and lies can't stay buried forever in Cedar Valley. In the summer, hikers and campers pack the small Colorado town's meadows and fields. And in the winter, skiers and snowboarders take over the mountains. Season by season, year after year, time passes and the lies, like the aspens and evergreens that surround the town, take root and spread deep. Now, someone has uncovered the lies, and it is his murder that continues a chain of events that began almost forty years ago. Detective Gemma Monroe's investigation takes her from the seedy grounds of a traveling circus to the powerful homes of those who would control Cedar Valley's future. Six-months pregnant, with a partner she can't trust and colleagues who know more than they're saying, Gemma tracks a killer who will stop at nothing to keep those secrets buried. Beautifully written with a riveting plot and a richly drawn cast of characters, Inherit the Bones is a mesmerizing debut from Emily Littlejohn" --

“I couldn't put down Inherit the Bones. Small town Colorado police detective Gemma Monroe is a human and fallible heroine I can't wait to meet again, and Littlejohn's prose is lyrical and gripping—the book is a sure bet for one of the finest debut novels of the year.”

A very good first book. The characters are interesting and complicated, the plot slightly unpredictable (as in, I didn't know until almost at the end which suspect was the killer). I am looking forward to reading more by Littlejohn.

Great debut mystery from Emily Littlejohn. Be on the lookout for some wonderfully descriptive gems such as “He paced the small office...It was like watching a bear swim laps in a jacuzzi.” You’ll love getting to know the main characters and want to meet them again in future installments.

Great book will be adding this author to my favorites list. I liked it because of the twist and turns, it has a good plot and it is well written. One of the best I have read this summer.

this is FIRST in author's series of 3 books, each with Gemma Monroe, detective, working in a small Colorado mountain town. Gemma has many talents in her discoveries. The author does a fine job of describing how Gemma processes her own questions and experiences while trying to solve the murder.
Enjoyable reading; like-able main characters; good writing; the mountain setting of a small town provides natural descriptions which are a refreshing change from "a big city" environment.
Gemma's relationships with her co-workers, other detectives, adds some charming-like dimension, as does her relationship with her family.
I recommend this book, followed then by A Season to Lie, also held by the spplibrary.

During a skiing trip, police officer Gemma Monroe stumbles upon the remains of two murdered boys, a mystery that rocked the small Colorado mountain town of Cedar Valley back in 1985. Years later, memories of that day and that case re-emerge when the body of the mayor's son is found, a teen who may have uncovered the identity of the boys' killers before he disappeared three years prior.

In her debut novel, Emily Littlejohn spins an intelligent and engrossing tale that intricately weaves past and present together with lots of twists and turns along the way. A thoroughly enjoyable read!

Finally, a book that kept me up all night reading because I just had find out who did it! For a debut novel, I thought this was excellent. Except for the small town Colorado setting, it reminded me a lot of Tana French’s Dublin murder squad series. Just like hers, it featured a complicated mystery, a slightly dark tone, and a squad of detectives each with lots of personal baggage. I’m thrilled to see that this is going to be the first in what hopefully will be a captivating series.

A great debut mystery with interesting characters and a decent whodunnit plot. I look forward to more from Littlejohn.
