An amazing movie, but tough to watch. Excellent performances.

A story of one prisoner confined to Alcatraz at the age of 17 for stealing $5.00 from the till of a grocery/post office in order to feed his 11 year old sister. The two were orphaned and the youngster was responsible for his little sister. The abuse the prisoner suffered is beyond the imagination. Sadistic assistant warden and guards and an official warden that was never present. (Although I think he would have been every bit as cruel). The treatment suffered by the prisoner after he tried to escape, the three years of solitary confinement changed him and he retaliated with violence. This is a movie worth watching. Alcatraz closed as a prison in 1963 and is now a tourist destination. (I would not want to take a tour of that reprehensible institution)!
