Great movie that shows one aspect of the Civil War that is never mentioned. Great true story and good acting.

This movie reveals how those living in the South got caught up in a war they did not want to fight and found refuge in a swamp in Mississippi. One man helped all men because they just wanted to be free to live and have the liberties promised to them by the Constitution. Great Story.

I started watching this as a civil war movie, not knowing that it is actually based on fact. Newton Knight did lead a revolution in the deep south. Good movie; dramatic guerrilla warfare; strong and interesting people fighting for their rights and beliefs.

Interesting historic drama about the civil war and the racial issues in the Southern States that went on for a hundred years after the war.

Yeah? Republicans? So this makes what republicans are doing now acceptable?
What are you saying with that comment? They are destroying our natural world.

Very good movie, a very difficult time in history for most except those with wealth. Also showed it was the republicans who set the slaves free and through history have done more for the blacks.

This was actually pretty good!

While it may not be the most gripping of movies, this little known story and history lesson is well worth the watch. Strongly suggest you also watch the bonus feature for a more in depth perspective and even greater appreciation of Newton Knight - an original thinker and man ahead of his time.

The most important quotes are in IMDb as these few:

Will Sumrall: [referring to Daniel] He died with honor.
Newton Knight: No, Will, he just died.
Number one, no man ought to stay poor so another man can get rich. Number two, no man ought to tell another man what you got to live for or what he's got to die for. Number three, what you put in the ground is yours to tend and harvest and there ain't no man ought to be able to take that away from you. Number four, every man is a man. If you walk on two legs, you're a man. It's as simple as that.
Moses: Deserted. How come?
Newton Knight: It ain't my fight, you know? Don't own no slaves. Ain't gonna die so they can get rich selling cotton.
Moses: That's why we left, too.
