Twelve-year-old Howard Wallace lives by his list of rules of private investigation. He knows more than anyone how to work with what he's got: a bathrobe for a trench coat, a makeshift office behind the school equipment shed, and not much else--least of all, friends. So when a hot case of blackmail lands on his desk, he's ready to take it on himself...until the new kid, Ivy Mason, convinces him to take her on as a junior partner. As they banter through stakeouts and narrow down their list of suspects, Howard starts to wonder if having Ivy as a sidekick--and a friend--is such a bad thing after all.

This novel is underrated. Howard Wallace is a hilarious detective and narrator, Ivy Mason is sassy and witty, and this novel is full of twists. I literally could not put this book down. I wanted to space out the book by reading a little every day for the suspense factor but clearly that didn’t work. The suspense was too much - I mean that in a good way.

When Howard Wallaces' two best friends move away and move on to other friendships, Howard makes himself over into a private eye. Soon he's solving crimes in middle school until the new girl, Ivy, comes along and asks to get in on the action as a partner. Howard and Ivy work on solving the big case of who stole the student council cheques. It's a twisty, turny mystery, but the two detectives work together and come up with a solution. A great start to a funny series by Canadian author, Casey Lyall.
