Thirteen years ago, surgeon Edward Hammond performed a life-saving operation on Serbian gangster Dragan Gazi. Now Gazi is standing trial for war crimes at the international court in The Hague. After Hammond saved his life, Gazi's men went on to slaughter thousands in the Balkan civil wars.

Now, in exchange for keeping Hammond's dirty little secret, Gazi's family want a small favour: to find the man who knows what happened to Gazi's money. But Italian financier Marco Piravani doesn't want to be found. And no sooner has Hammond tracked him down than he disappears again. Hammond has no choice but to set off across Europe in pursuit.

In Blood Count, every action has a consequence and every question must have an answer. Only then might Hammond be able to lay the past to rest...

Blood Count --- by --- Robert Goddard. Goddard is quite the accomplished wordsmith. After a reading of two of his other novels,´” The Ways of the World”, and” The Corners of the Globe” it became quite evident that devouring as many of his other novels as I could find would be a treat. And “Count” was eminently devourable. The novel is set, for the most part, in the former Yugoslavia. In the aftermath of the wars and terrors that followed Tito’s death , bodies were being found; treachery was being revealed; scores were still being settled. Against this backdrop, Doctor Hammond is duped and duped again. Who can he trust? Who is about to betray him? He is sent on a fool’s errand; many of them, to find the money; to find the perpetrator; to find the monster; to find himself. The plot lined is complex. When the tale should end it does not. When it does: eh? You will race through Blood Count. And then you’ll probably be looking for more.

First time reading this author. Lighter plot then other authors but kept me interested. I will be reading some of his other works.

Goddard is always a good read for vacations, weekends, plane trips. Absorbing mystery thrillers that usually invovle secrets of the past resurfacing.
