Britain's finest short-story writer returns with a sparking new collection.
Cockfosters holds a mirror up to the way we live -- the old, comfortable friendships and small, slight connections we make with the people we pass. From the middle-aged school friends on an unplanned journey to the end of the Piccadilly Line to the recipe written to a daughter on the verge of adulthood, Helen Simpson writes with great warmth, wit and candour about the complexities of modern life.
Her previous collections have been compared to Flannery O'Connor and Alice Munro, and Verticals and Horizontals is yet another masterpiece -- sly on gender, dazzling on love, and interwoven with the skill we have come to expect from one of our greatest authors.

Baker & Taylor
Cockfosters is a funny, frank and forceful story collection dealing with ageing, ambition and the patterns of repetition and renewal found in long friendships and marriages. It opens irresistible new windows onto the world from Arizona to Dubai and from Moscow to Berlin. Turning both a panoramic and a zoom lens on the way we live now, these stories range through hitch-hiking in Bohemian forest-land to cresting the waves of the Aegean to the mending of hearts and the recovery of lost property at the end of the Piccadilly Line. Helen Simpson writes with great warmth, wit and candour about the complexities of modern life, and this new collection shows why she is hailed as one of the best short story writers at work in the world today.

Simpson is a wonderful writer, chronicling in her stories the phases of a woman's life with understanding and wit. In this collection, the women are becoming older. One story is longer than the others - "Berlin" - in which a middle age couple travel to Berlin on a "Ring package".
