Kookum, a grandmother, tells her story of being forcibly taken away from her family as a child to live at a residential school. Memories of the bright red shoes that her mother had lovingly bought for her help to sustain her through a harsh and strict life very different from the one she had known at home. The book vividly portrays in words and often very harsh cartoon-like images a "sad chapter in Canadian history" when more than "150,000 children were separated from their families and communities".
