Two percent of the world's population has disappeared. Was it the Rapture? A mass murder? Cult suicides? Aliens? Based on Tom Perrotta's bestselling novel, the series follows Kevin Garvey, police chief and father of two in Mapletown, New York, three years after the mysterious event. As Garvey struggles to grieve for his losses, rebuild his life, and regain a sense of normalcy within the community, the world around him grows ever stranger.

Returned without watching.

May 3-star rating and comments here reflect my thoughts and feelings about all DVD packages that span this three-season series.

Premise: suddenly, inexplicably, millions of people around the globe just...disappear. All ages (even the unborn--Imagine, going in for a routine ultrasound of the "baby to be" and watching it just...disappear on the examination room screen...), all countries, people from every conceivable walk of life. Just...gone. The obvious questions: why? How?

But the key to understanding--and appreciating--this compelling series is in the title, The Leftovers. A stunning, and cunning concept from novelist Tom Perrotta, the story focuses NOT on the mystery or the fate of the missing, but those trying to cope with the AFTERMATH...those millions of distraught, angry, puzzled, bereft people called "the Leftovers."

How would you cope? How would I? Larger question: how would society? What effects does the event leave, when there appears to be no "closure" for anyone?

Each of three seasons becomes more bizarre and, often, hilarious, as the Leftovers try to resolve something that is seemingly beyond resolution. Wait until you view Season Three--the finale. Oh, boy.

The series is beguiling. Nothing is explained and the stories are raw in their emotions.

I would definitely recommend viewing this and it gets better with season 2. You will need to suspend your desire for a three act , linear story . You won't find it in Leftovers but you will get hooked on the characters and how they deal with their loved ones suddenly disappearing.
