Simon and Schuster
An all-new Star Trek novel from New York Times bestselling author Greg Cox, taking place in the blockbuster Original Series era!

The year is 2255, not long after the events of the Original Series episode “The Cage.” A young Spock is science officer on the U.S.S. Enterprise, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, when an outbreak of deadly Rigelian fever threatens the crew. Reviewing the Starfleet medical database, Dr. Phillip Boyce comes up with a highly experimental and untested new treatment that might save the crew. Just one problem: it requires a rare mineral substance, ryetalyn, which is not easily obtained…except on a remote alien colony near the Klingon border. But borders are somewhat blurry in this part of galaxy. Pike will need to tread carefully in order to avoid provoking an armed conflict with the Klingons—or starting an all-out war.

* This story takes place during the time when Christopher Pike captains the Enterprise. Though Spock is on the cover, he's not really the main character. Instead, it's an ensemble piece. I enjoyed getting to know Pike's crew better, and my favorite characters were Number One, Yeoman Colt, and Chief Engineer Caitlin Barry. This book makes me want to read more about Pike's crew.

* It's not the most original book, and it's not the best written, either, but my gosh, it sure is exciting. There is medical drama! There is transporter drama! There is away team drama! And there is much, much Klingon drama!

* Aaaaaand there is cake!!! Okay, I know that not everyone gets excited about cake, but I love reading about food. The book opens with a flashback about Amanda giving Spock chocolate cake on his seventh birthday. And then later in the book there are tasty alien cupcakes--homemade Cyprian nutberry cakes, to be precise. Hey, if Deanna Troi can get excited about chocolate, I can get excited about cake. :)
