The concept of the book was great, but the book felt rushed. I wanted to know more and was left feeling like I didn't understand the characters or situation. The lack of depth lead to what looked like inconsistencies in characters' decisions and in the conflict itself. I think this story would've been told better in a trilogy with time for us to get to know Scarlett, her friends, and the dangerous magic she was born into.

This is a quick reading, hard-boiled, noir style mystery with a super believable teen girl voice and likeable characters. If you were into Veronica Mars you should give this book a try. Scarlett is THE BEST. I loved her voice, the snarky detective-story-style one liners, and the sisterly dynamic. I'm hoping this is a series!

A funny, fearless girl detective, her adorable nine-year-old client, and a mystery that pits her against a scary cult of people with weird eyes who believe in djinn and magical ancient treasures. I defy you to put this book down once you begin.
