I enjoyed reading these letters written by a young Russian Mennonite couple to each other during the early years of WWI. They write of ordinary things - every day occurrences, village life, and relationships with other Mennonites. Always there is mention of food, clothing and money being sent to the young husband who is on a medic train during WWI. The letters stop when the husband rejoins his family in August 1917. The editor has included a list of the family members with birth, death dates, names of spouses and children. Informative information written briefly tells what happened to this family in the ensuing civil war and their living conditions. The family left Russia in Riga for Canada in 1925. They lived in Alberta until 1945 when they moved to East Chilliwack. The Preface explains how the editor came about these letters. While the editor is related to the writers of the letters, he lets them speak - no editorializing which I appreciated. Useful footnotes explain terms, relationships of people mentioned, and living conditions. Includes a small selection of photos of the family while in Russia and later in Canada. Bibliography pertains to the Mennonite experience in Russia. The book adds depth to a collection of material relating to the people in Russia during WWI.
