The Equalizer is a story of retribution. Robert McCall is a trained killer who gets rid of killers. They bad guys had it coming. McCall does it mercilessly & exterminates the predators in society with cool efficiency. By day, McCall works in a home supply store. The grand finally occurs in the home supply store. The bad guys are taken down with blow torches, barbed wire, chains, nail guns, fire extinguishers, cement & other building materials. The ending was very exciting for those who enjoy action movies. This them has been done before. Action movie buffs will like this offering.

Rated 6/10. An okay movie, albeit a bit violent and predictable.

This is still one of my very favorite films. The beauty of it is that here's a man who promised his dead wife he wouldn't kill anymore. He even faked his death to leave the CIA. But then he happens upon a 13 year old Russian hooker being beaten by her pimp and that all changes. What I love most about this film is that Antoine Fuqua took an older actor (Denzel Washington was in his 60s when this film was made) and made him the hero without showing everything he did. Like when the Home Depot is robbed and his coworkers' grandmother's ring is stolen. We don't see him go after the thief. We see him take a hammer and return it the next day and the ring miraculously turns up in the woman's cashier's drawer. :) That being said, the fight scene in the beginning and the end are the best fight scenes I've seen on film in my lifetime. Fuqua should've received an award for this. It is by far his best film. The music is beautiful and haunting at the same time.

Instead of this movie i would recommend Man on Fire basically the same movie but Much better (also stars Denzel Washington) the end of this movie was ridiculous. A stand off in Home Depot where rather than use any of the guns lying around he used products from Home Depot to kill off the bad guys.

This is such a bad movie... vigilante cliche crap with no story and tonnes of violence.

Reminds me of the ultra-quality of the Jason Bourne films [the ones with Matt Damon] - - Denzel was superb in this, as was the scripting and directing/fight scene setups - - outstanding! Best actors in America: Denzel Washington and Matt Damon [there's this Scottish guy, but technically he's not American].

Excellent story...one of Denzel's best, which is saying a lot. His character isn't an unrealistic killing Machine like Rambo or a mindless killer like Jason Vorhees, he is simply a retired Man living a quiet life who is thrust back into a world he'd much rather forget. The action is intense but never feels over the top, and the story is plausible enough to be convincing. I really enjoyed this one and can't wait for the sequel!

I have watched this movie three times now. Denzel is great in this violent action revenge tale. The choreography is great. The stop-action heightens the drama. The villains are as nasty as can be. Sure, it's all over-the-top violence in this story of a heroic loner handing out his version of justice.

Pretty straight-up "one man versus the world" vigilante fare, with strong performances by Denzel as the mildly OCD protagonist and Marton Csokas as the refreshingly compelling and formidable Russian baddie. Fans of Chloe Grace-Moretz will be surprised that her character isn't given more to do given her prominence in the marketing, but apart from that few surprises here.

Formulatic story of a former CIA bad-boy who decides to exact revenge on a crew of Russian mobsters who wronged his pals. McCall (Washington) dose a "Damn-Damn" on anyone who messes with his alter-ego flunkies and dose so in a most "Spanish Inquisition" fashion. Great action but "Home Depot" scenes were a little too dark to see how, exactly McCall kills his Russian victims???

"Bob" explains Moby Dick to Teri:
Teri: He ever catch it?
Bob: Hm?
Teri: The fish.
Bob: Oh, yeah. Yes. Yeah, he did.
Teri: It's a happy ending.
Bob: Well, not exactly. Old man tied the fish to the side of the boat. Had to row back to shore. Fish bled in the water. Sharks came and ate the whole fish till there was nothing left.
Teri: That's just kind of a waste, isn't it?
Bob: Depends upon how you look at it. The old man met his adversary when he thought that part of his life was over. He saw himself in the fish. Came to...Came to respect it the more it fought.
Teri: Why didn't he just let the fish go?
Bob: The old man's gotta be the old man. Fish gotta be the fish. Gotta be who you are
in this world, right? No matter what.
