Anne Bishop says this book is a stand-alone title that can be read before or after the trilogy. Personally, I'm glad I read it after, as book 4 in the Black Jewels series. In book 3, Jaenelle bases her solution to the impending war between the realms on a spell created a few centuries earlier. The Invisible Ring is the story that goes into detail about what that original spell was. I found it fascinating to read, and, as per the usual with one of these Black Jewels books, I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. :)
