In the first novel in New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop’s beloved Black Jewels Trilogy, a race of witches and warlocks whose power is channeled through magical jewels will meet their once and future queen…

Seven hundred years ago, a Black Widow witch saw an ancient prophecy come to life in her web of dreams and visions. Now the Dark Kingdom readies itself for the arrival of its Queen, a Witch who will wield more power than even the High Lord of Hell himself. But she is still young, still open to influence—and corruption.

Whoever controls the Queen controls the darkness. Three men—sworn enemies—know this. And they know the power that hides behind the blue eyes of an innocent young girl. And so begins a ruthless game of politics and intrigue, magic and betrayal, where the weapons are hate and love—and the prize could be terrible beyond imagining...

Definitely a different type of dark fantasy than I am used to reading. I hesitate to say it's about witches because it's not your typical black witch with a cauldron and a cat running around, but none the less it is an interesting imagining of witches. And not just witches but several different types of dark fantasy archetypes as well! The first book over all is amazing-- although sad and tragic-- but the world building and character development is what hooked me. Onto book 2!

Terrible writing. Truly awful. The story may have had potential, but the writing absolutely killed it.

Fantastically written account of a living history, painting vivid images upon your memory with vibrant characters.

Captivating fast paced full of action, adventure, mystery, living folklore, romance, intrigue, and such humorously exhibited quirks make each character leap from the page.

Above all else, I was left with a supreme belief that love in all its glorious and terrifying forms can inspire events that spiral from the stars, down in the darkest corners of the abyss.

An addicting and fun read in a world that is similar to the structure we have and yet totally different. Can't wait to read the rest.

This is the first book in the Black Jewels Trilogy/Series of novels and it was fantastic! We meet all the main characters, both good and bad, and the story is gripping and entertaining and I found it impossible to put down once I started it. :)
