What a scoundrel wants, a scoundrel gets . . .
A decade ago, the Marquess of Bourne was cast from society with nothing but his title. Now a partner in London’s
most exclusive gaming hell, the cold, ruthless Bourne will do whatever it takes to regain his inheritance—including marrying perfect, proper Lady Penelope Marbury.

A broken engagement and years of disappointing courtships have left Penelope with little interest in a quiet, comfortable marriage, and a longing for something more. How lucky that her new husband has access to an unexplored world of pleasures.

Bourne may be a prince of London’s illicit underworld, but he vows to keep Penelope untouched by its wickedness—a challenge indeed as the lady discovers her own desires, and her willingness to wager anything for them . . . even her heart.

Baker & Taylor

I haven't read a primarily historical romance in a while. And I think my favourite part of this particular genre is the amusing banter and word play.

I'm not sure I was completely on board with Bourne's righteous anger or his revenge even though he claims that Langford cheated at vingt-en-un. You lost the game...deal with it, live with it. His self-pitying was a little too much at times. Also, his great emotional revelation was a little cliché and formulaic though I did enjoy that one last game. They're both quite stubborn, Michael more so and it annoyed me quite a bit when he would just reject whatever heart felt confession Penelope would say.

In her case, I was frustrated how despite wanting adventure she would stay at home for most of the days in the beginning of their marriage. Does she have no hobbies? Nothing to keep her busy? I feel she didn't take as much advantage of her 'freedom' under Michael's marriage as she could have. Plus, it was a little sad to see her stubborn, foolish hopes get crushed over and over again. Some pretty harsh and belittling words were directed towards her throughout the book and I was hoping she would quit pursuing in that line of direction and look somewhere else for happiness (though I suppose that would defeat the whole purpose of the book).

All in all, a pleasurable read.
