What first grabbed me about this picture books was the illustrator's style. The cover and illustrations have a graphic novel style to them. The story itself is succinct, making the illustrations a key part of the plot. Each page seems to warrant a pause.

This story touches on the historical Berlin Wall and discusses the personal impact it had. Some themes which stood out during my first and second read-throughs were the love between a child and a parent (specifically father) and the universality of love. Side note: the last page makes me melt.

A very quick read. Nice, modern style illustrations. What I disliked about it is that 1) It makes it seems as building a tunnel and escaping to the other side of the wall was a quick and easy thing to do. It certainly doesn't emphasize the hardship of families living in the East and the immense courage it takes to try to escape. I also wish there would have been a full page at the end to contextualize the story and explain what the Wall was about and how many persons attempted to escape. There is only a one paragraph note on the dust jacket about it and it certainly doesn't seem sufficient.

A short story of the Berlin Wall and the impact it had on families when it went up. Not detailed but interesting.
