Former CIA officer Valerie Plame and Sarah Lovett, authors of the “tense spy thriller”* Blowback, return with a globe-hopping, nerve-shattering new novel featuring covert CIA ops officer Vanessa Pierson.

When Vanessa narrowly escapes a devastating explosion at the Louvre, she suspects the notorious nuclear arms dealer Bhoot was behind the attack. But after staking her career on capturing the madman, it seems a new and even greater threat has emerged.

A previously unknown militant group claims responsibility for the bombing and promises even greater carnage. Bhoot himself contacts Vanessa to confirm that a miniaturized nuclear device may have fallen into hands more dangerous than his own.

As Vanessa’s investigation leads her to the real terrorists’ plans, she finds herself drawn into a perilous alliance with one of the world’s most dangerous criminals—a man who has become her darkest obsession . . . and perhaps her savior.

I liked the exotic locales and the pace of this thriller - it's a perfect summer read.

Former CIA agent Valerie Plame, perhaps the most famous modern-day victim of an act of treason, has fought back with the power of the pen. In the second novel in a series, Vanessa Pierson - a fictitious caricature of the author - tries to stop what is the midnight nightmare for many of us, a nuclear bomb small enough to fit inside of a briefcase (the very area Plame was working on when she was betrayed). A mysterious terrorist who turns out to be an unlikely ally, as well a fellow CIA agent with whom she has a torrid (and inappropriate) affair, are about the only people she can trust while she zeros in on the prime suspect, the last person anyone could expect. The book also gives insight to the often difficult but still necessary relationships allies' intelligence agencies have.
