People tend to either love or hate this movie. I loved it. It had a decent science fiction story with just the right amount of social commentary, which is the standard for Neill Bloomkamp movies. The 'soft dystopia' of future earth was more believable than most other dystopian movie settings. My only gripe with this movie has nothing to do with the film itself, but that Neil Bloomkamp chose to make this film instead of a much needed sequel to District 9.

This is science fiction. Not my taste in movies.

Lots of action...almost too much & too fast to follow! How does the hero survive all the punches & bullets & electric shocks? I mean even with that mechanically enhanced body! Suspenseful & dystopian SF but I liked Automata more.

Typical action/sci fi movie - not as bad as it seemed critics thought, even got some feels near the end. Lots of fight scenes. Some logic issues but still decent. Never saw district 9

Plot/story development by committee. This movie tried to do way too many things at once. Meh.

I really enjoyed this movie. It is neither subtle nor embarrassed to wear its messages on its sleeves. Anyone not wanting to have their privilege rubbed in their face will likely not enjoy this movie. For the rest of us, this is a largely successful, high octane, thoughtful well directed action sic-fi drama.

There is an elephant in the movie that needs to be addressed though. The biggest problem with this film is the casting of Matt Damon as the main working class, spanish speaking anti-hero when EVERYONE around him is Hispanic or otherwise non white. He does a fine job, but it was more jarring for me that other examples of the mighty-Whitey trope like Dances with Wolves or Avatar, where the point at least was that the outsider could find a way other than his own to live. Here Matt Damon is nearly the only white guy who isn't in the elite, and it stands out. I wonder who they wanted to cast originally before the studio heads freaked out at not having a generic white guy in the lead action role?

A stunning action film.

This is a 2013 American dystopian SF action thriller directed by Neill Blomkamp.
The film takes place on both a ravaged Earth and a luxurious space habitat (rotating wheel space station) called Elysium.
Although the story is simple and straightforward, the computer graphics and visual effects are superb.
I really love this movie, however, I don't like Jodie Foster at all for some undescribable reason.

A futuristic story of how the 1% built a space station nation so they could live there and avoid the pollution and poverty of the Earth where the 99% were segregated and confined. Hey, this is just a few years ahead of today, where the 1% live in gated communities and mansions so they don’t have to look at the mess of the world that they left behind. This is basically an action film, so the ideas of the two societies are left undeveloped.

Coarse Language: A lot of F-bombs were used. Take caution.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: There were many bloody and gory scenes that were very unexpected (for example, a person gets blown up into pieces, which were visible).

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Take the R rating seriously.

Coarse Language: I think it'd be a good idea for the actors to wash their mouths with really strong soap.

Violence: Much like District 9, this movie is extremely heavy in the violence department. Although all the action is very well done and the effects are fantastic. This guy knows how to make a serious action movie.

Jan 29, 2014

Coarse Language: Probably well over 100 f words and many other smaller swears. It's rated R for a reason.

Jan 29, 2014

Frightening or Intense Scenes: The whole movie is very intense and probably frightening for kids to watch. Heck, I'm 19 and it was a lot for me.

Coarse Language: some swearing and saying the lords name in vain in one part
