#1 New York Times bestselling author Patricia Briggs presents the first Alpha and Omega novel—the start of an extraordinary series set in Mercy Thompson’s world, but with rules of its own...

Anna never knew werewolves existed until the night she survived a violent attack…and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the pack, she’d learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. But Anna is that rarest kind of werewolf: an Omega. And one of the most powerful werewolves in the country is about to recognize her value as a pack member—and as his mate.

Includes a new introduction from the author as well as the novella, "Alpha and Omega," originally published in On The Prowl, that inspired the series and tells how Anna and Charles's story began.

Just a note, this book is not the first of the series! I love Patricia Briggs, but good heavens, her mix of series and short stories is confusing! If you go to her website, she has a "Mercyverse" timeline that is very helpful. Before reading this one, read "Moon Called" and then "Alpha and Omega" the short story, which can be found in the book titled "Shifting Shadows."

I was halfway through the Mercy Thompson series and was thinking, gee, I feel like I missed something! There were major events happening between novels that impacted the stories in a big way but only got a minor mention at the beginning of the book. Turns out there's this WHOLE OTHER SERIES running parallel to that one! Well, I finally caught up, and I'm so glad I did. The Mercy Thompson series feels more full knowing more about Bran's history, Charles, and his mate Anna. I think Anna's characterization is not nearly as strong and consistent as Mercy's or Charles', but it's still a great series and I love it's fast-paced combo of fantasy adventure, mystery, romance, and humor.

This series is a tangent to the Mercy Thompson series, and should probably be read after Moon Called as the characters from that book are mentioned here, and the characters here were more carefully introduced in that story. I didn't read On the Prowl, so I am sure I missed something from that, too. Even is this is your first choice to begin reading Briggs, you will enjoy the romp across the frozen wilds of Montana with a newly in love couple of werewolves--one made, one born, both fascinating.

Best part of the book was the begining, dragged on from there.

Book 1 of the Alpha and Omega series, but it was preceded by a must read short novella in the book On the Prowl. This story is a continuation of what happens after the Anna and Charles arrive in Montana. This book is exciting but if you are looking for a true romance - this is not it, as it does not have much sexual context. Enjoyable read, followed by Anna's and Charles' next story Hunting Ground.

Continuation of short story in "On the Prowl". Starts to develop relationship between Charles and Anna. Fills in details about Charles' role in the pack.

Generally entertaining. A wee bit of a drag near the end.

This is a great book for those who have read the Mercy Thompson books, as it builds on some of the characters mentioned. I would also recommend it for those who read the Twilight series but wished for a character with more depth. Anna is a werewolf that was abused from the time she was turned until when Charles came to her rescue and killed the Chicago Alpha wolf. She falls for him and is swept off to Montana, where she has no connections other than him. Her strong moral sense as well as her insecurities about who she is makes her a complex character who is struggling to find her place. The secondary characters also have depth, whether it is a haunting past or a painful future. One of them is Asil, whose past returns to haunt him, making for a gripping plotline.

This is the first full book in the ALPHA AND OMEGA series, but readers should begin with “Alpha and Omega,” a novella in the "On the Prowl" anthology which tells the very beginning of Anna and Charles's love story. "Cry Wolf: begins just where the novella leaves off. Here are the titles for the series in reading order: “Alpha and Omega” in the "On the Prowl" anthology (2007); “Seeing Eye” in "Strange Brew" anthology (2009); "Cry Wolf" (2008); "Hunting Ground" (2009). A third book is planned for January 2012. This World is the "country" side of the MERCY THOMPSON World. Many of the same characters appear in both series.

Anna is moving in with Charles and learning what having a real pack is like. The mating bond just isn't connecting between her and Charles though because of what her old pack leader did to her. (rape and abuse) Since she's an Omega (basically a werewolf who transcends the dominant/submissive code as well as having the ability to soothe the inner wolf on others) the abuse hit her harder. There's also a rouge wolf on the loose and a sinister witch from a pack member's past.

The plot is a little slower in the beginning but picks up right away after that. The tone of the book is more subdued and nervous but that's perfect for Anna's story.
