When Mitch McDeere signed on with Bendini, Lambert & Locke of Memphis, he thought that he and his beautiful wife, Abby, were on their way. The firm leased him a BMW, paid off his school loans, arranged a mortgage, and hired the McDeeres a decorator. Mitch should have remembered what his brother Ray–doing fifteen years in a Tennessee jail–already knew: You never get nothing for nothing. Now the FBI has the lowdown on Mitch’s firm and needs his help. Mitch is caught between a rock and a hard place, with no choice–if he wants to live.

I think this is a very good book considering it's relatively early in the list from Grisham. It's definitely not as polished as later books and if you've seen the movie you cannot help but think of Tom Cruise, but it's still a good read

The problem with hearing about an author before reading his books is that the books may not live up to your expectations. This was the case with this book. It is the second Grisham book I've read (the first was The Last Juror, and I decided to give him one more go by reading this one). It is fairly interesting, fairly thrilling. It's not really my cup of tea. The writing was dull, especially the conversations, which seemed forced and practised, and the characters, cardboard placeholders in my opinion which elicited no sympathy. All Mitch's problems are his own fault, and I wasn't brought to care.

I enjoy most John Grisham books. This one, however, has been my least favourite read. The characters and plot are a little too unbelievable and don't get much more interesting than the summary on the back cover.

I guess it's a classic of the genre and from that perspective an interesting read. But I found many of the characters and plot twists unbelievable and the main character (Mitch McDeere) rather unpleasant (what gets him and his wife into trouble in the first place is their love of money and all things material). I'll probably read some more Grisham, to give him the benefit of the doubt, but The Firm did not live up to expectation.

The first Grisham book I ever read, and I was hooked!
