This is a layered book that allows readers to decide for themselves what balance of entertainment to allegorical/metaphorical/philosophical insight they want to take from it.
It's a perfectly exciting, often lighthearted adventure story of a young man learning to make his way in the world, hoping to not be a monster to others and deal with the monsters that haunt him--specifically, Boy, the son of Frankenstein's Monster and The Bride, leaves the safe monster* enclave hidden in New York City he's always known, creates strategies to avoid being seen as monstrous, finds love (twice), travels across the country, and runs from and fights hostiles.
But what teen doesn't sometimes feel like a "monster" who fears "the mob" could turn angry and make him/her an outcast? What teen doesn't get tired of being called "Boy" (or "Girl") and want to start over with a new adult name? And, of course, who doesn't wonder why they were created and what purpose or meaning they might find in a universe that all too often feels empty, lonely, and hostile?
The book is saturated with opportunities to identify with and consider thoughts such as these, though it is first, foremost, and above all fun.

*"Monster," in this case, meaning just about anything out of mythology, folklore, and literature from around the world, most often based on magic but not excluding technology and artificial intelligence. The book is crammed full of all manner of creatures and references.
