De Botton has an engaging writing style that makes for an enjoyable read, but he assumes a lot about the "universality" of his opinion. Ultimately, This habit of his left me questioning many of his arguments and interpretations. The book did not leave me "thinking more deeply and wisely about sex" so much as distracted by my lack of faith in the validity of the author's conclusions.

I like Alain De Botton's writing style and the way he explores subjects from philosophy and literature to sex. I knew this would be an entertaining and provocative read and I was not disappointed. He genuinely provokes a more open, non-judgemental, personal and intimate way of thinking about sex. With one exception.
His section on pornography is a startling contrast to the rest of the book. De Botton becomes so critical, judgmental and close-minded, particularly about internet pornography, that he is not able to see another perspective or present any benefit or pornography. He even goes so far as to advocate governmental and religious censorship - censorship that represses individuals. It's almost as if the section is written by a different, contrasting and more close-minded person than the man who wrote the rest of the book. It makes me hesitate to read his book on religion.
So, for me, this is a mixed review. I wholeheartedly enjoyed and recommend the book except for the section on pornography. I won't resort to the kind of censorship De Botton suggests. I would just suggest reading that section with a less judgmental mind (about that particular subject) than De Botton's.
