For defense attorney Mickey Haller, the clock is always running. With two ex-wives, four Lincoln Town Cars that he uses as offices, and dozens of guilty clients, he can't afford to miss a trick. When he gets picked by a Beverly Hills rich boy arrested for assault, Mickey sees a franchise case: a nice, long, expensive trial with maximum billable hours--until it hurtles him into the last place he wants to be. Suddenly hustling, cynical Mickey Haller is confronted with pure evil and someone who may be truly innocent. Now, for a lawyer who has always gone for the easy score, getting justice means taking the deadliest risk of all.

Baker & Taylor
Representing the system's most unsavory characters in his work as a criminal defense lawyer, jaded attorney Mickey Haller takes on his first high-paying and possibly innocent client in years, but finds the case complicated by sinister events that suggest the workings of a particularly evil perpetrator. 500,000 first printing.

I have commented before on not liking Haller as much as Bosch because Connelly seems a little boxed in when writing in the first person. But clearly this earlier effort is far better than some of his later ones. This one is taut and despite being mostly linear, there is enough background to keep two cases running parallel with enough intersections between the two (did I just write that oxymoron - just like military intelligence, I suppose) to keep the reader on his or her toes. Actually my favourite Haller story so far.

I thought this was one of his best works. Great read!! I'm now going to reserve the movie and hope they didn't make too many changes from the book.

The book was okay – but not one of my favorites.

Loved this book. Couldn't put it down. I didn't know they were making it a movie and just after I finished the book it came to the theater. Good read, good movie.

Michael Connelly certainly has a winner in the character of Mickey Haller. He's the perfect modern day embodiment of the irascible scoundrel of days gone by. The guy defends the scum of the earth, putting killers and rapists back on the street based on technicalities, and yet the reader loves him. In the hands of a lesser writer this book would've been a train wreck but Connelly has crafted a true gem here.

Micky Haller is a sleazy defense lawyer who will defend anyone as long as that person keeps the cash flowing. He has only one fear- to condemn an innocent man to jail. When he is paid by a seemingly rich Mamma's boy to defend him in a trial where he claims to be innocent, Haller finds himself dragged into a dark world of murder and lies. How does one go about defending pure evil?
