Directed by Mike Leigh in 1999, this British musical drama depicts the creative conflict during the 15-month period in 1884 and 1885 leading up to the premiere of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera "The Mikado".
Although an in-depth illustration of British life in the theatre during the Victorian era appears interesting, the drama itself seems dull and slow-paced.
In any case, the comic opera seems ridiculous to the eyes of the native Japanese.
Love the music and lyrics.
Director Mike Leigh being who he is, you might suspect this film of being an exposé of imperialism and other ills of late 19th century England; and Leigh does make the occasional anvilacious point. But don't let that put you off. Topsy-turvy is a delightful comedy-drama, about the highs and lows of creating Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado. It starts slowly, but have patience. Excellent performances, beautiful costumes and sets, a shrewd and compassionate script, and of course beautiful music. If you enjoy movies about putting on a show, watch this instead of the wildly over-hyped Hollywood competitors. Topsy-turvy is one of the great movies of the 1990s.
Fantastic fun British dramedy~ outstanding cast and singing is top notch ~ 420
'Mr. Turner', and this one make use of what has been described as 'heritage culture'. Whereas 'Mr. Turner' is focused on an individual artist within his culture, this goes into collaborative work, even very pointedly extending to contributions from cast and crew. For all of the obvious craft on display, the focus, such as it is, is on the day to day progress of getting 'The Mikado' on stage. It seems to me the possible interest here is at the edges, left hanging. On the other hand, we get a good picture of how men manage to get together to do something in that era, from someone who get things done in this one. There's even a beggar in the works.
Beautiful production values. The singing actors are all very good. Rather long (3 hrs). Sort of bowls you over the first time you see it. Gets better with each successive viewing. I am in love with this film.
Delightful, colorful and so well acted. Check out Shirley Henderson and Kevin McKidd among so many others.
Gorgeous set design, gorgeous costumes, gorgeous and hilarious script, gorgeous and hilarious acting, gorgeous sound, and if you are a G & S fan you will be absolutely in your glory!!
Masterful film-making. A soothing tonic in an era of copious ADHD-exploiting movie dreck.
Watched the Guardians of the Galaxy. Topsy-Turvy was a welcome cleanser after the noise and worthless spectacle of GoG. Mike Leigh is an under appreciated director. His movies show real people acting like real people!
We could not get the English subtitles to stop!! The film is in English!! Most annoying ... we finally gave up.
