"Haveli" is a fabulous book that allows the reader to feel completely immersed and engaged in a young woman's struggle to protect herself and her family from the abuses of class, culture, and gender discrimination. The author does such a wonderful job evoking the sights, sounds, feels, and smells of desert, rural, and urban Pakistan that the reader sinks right into the story and wishes it would go on and on. But remember, this is a high stakes adventure story. So be ready to want to read as fast as you can. However, before you start, read "Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind," the book that precedes "Haveli" in order to fully understand "Haveli."
