Summary
Add a SummaryIt was just bad timing when you get right down to it. Dale just wanted to borrow Mr. Jesse’s boat for a little fishing and his best friend Mo LoBeau would have accompanied him if she hadn’t been working the town’s only café while her two guardians (the elegant Miss Lana and the amnesia-stricken Colonel) were unavailable. Then Mr. Jesse offered a reward for the boat, and that seemed worth taking advantage of. That was before he ended up dead. Caught inadvertently in the middle of a murder mystery, Mo decides to help solve the crime, hopefully without making Detective Joe Starr too angry in the process.
Quotes
Add a Quote- “I wouldn’t say stole . . . But I did borrow it pretty strong.”
- “By 7:30 half the town had crowded into the café and rising seventh grader Skeeter McMillan – tall, slender, freckles the color of fresh-sliced baloney – had claimed this counter’s last spot.”
- “The stranger looked slow around the café, his eyes the color of a thin winter sky.”
- “Miss Lana’s voice is the color of sunlight in maple syrup.”
- “Mr. Li started Karate Night at the café two years ago . . . I enjoy kicking others but would do better in an art that allows spitting.”
- “I used to think Dale was clumsy. Then I realized he only got clumsy when Mr. Macon took drunk.”
- “My voice is like a turkey gobble crammed in a corset, but nobody’s told me to stop singing, and I ain’t shy.”
- “Dale can choose not to worry like he chooses not to wear socks. Miss Lana says I have more of a Jack Russell brain. I think things apart for sport.”
- “I never forgive. I like revenge too much.”

Moses LoBeau, a tween living Tupelo Landing NC, was left in a basket by her mother during a hurricane, rescued by her adopted parents, Colonel and Miss Lana. When there is a murder in town, she and her best friend Dale, start The Desperados Detective Agency, aiming to conquer the killer and crush the case! A hilarious read aloud series, where you will really connect with the characters and won't want the book to end!
Although there are kids in danger (don’t read aloud if they are too young), many will be laughing out loud throughout. Great dialogue. Excellent writing. Fun to read as an adult.
A mystery about a girl, Mo, who is rescued from the river as a baby and raised by those who find her. She periodically sends messages in a bottle upriver in hopes of connecting with her birth mom. A murder happens in their small town, and Mo takes it upon herself to solve the case. In the end she realized what, and who, is most important. Mo is such a neat kid, and I really enjoyed following her tenacity and endearing stubbornness through the book.
THIS BOOK IS THE BEST
Moses LoBeau lives in a small North Carolina town called Tupelo Landing filled with a slew of wonderful oddball characters. The book is heavy on Southern charm and Moses (Mo) is a wickedly smart, engaging main character you can't help but fall in love with! The mystery in this book is secondary to the character relationships, but it's still a fast-paced and fun read as Mo and her friend Dale race to find a murderer. Middle school mystery lovers will enjoy this first entry into the Mo & Dale mystery series.
One of the funniest juvenile mystery novels ever. Moses LoBeau – she’s a girl, call her “Mo,” please – was washed up on the shore of Tupelo Landing, North Carolina as a baby, after a great hurricane. She was taken in by Miss Lana and the Colonel (he doesn’t know where he’s from either) who run a little diner. It’s summer and Mo calls herself a “risin’ 6th grader.” Life is mostly fun for Mo with her best friend Dale Earnhardt Johnson III and all of the odd people in the town --- all of whom seem to eat at the diner. She is in love with Dale’s older brother, Lavender (yes, there’s a story in the name), who is a 20-year old mechanic into stock car racing. (It is North Carolina, after all.) But she is also obsessed with writing journal entries to her “Upstream Mother” – the woman she imagines to have lost her in the hurricane.
Suddenly the town’s crankiest resident and worst tipper is found murdered, with Dale being the only person seen nearby at the time. Now the Colonel has disappeared and other people are missing. Can two 12 year old detectives solve the mystery and help Mo find her place in the world along the way? Great Southern characters and a charming voice for Mo bring the story to life. Perfect for reading aloud, if you can stop laughing long enough to read.
This book was amazing! It was full of mysteries and you never knew what was going to happen next. It was very fun to read and I would definitely recommend it. My personal favourite part of the book was Miss Lanas character. She seemed like someone that was always joyful, but she also knew how to defend herself. Please read this book, you'll love it!
A suspenseful page-turner! Someone is murdered, and two kids are trying to crack the mystery. Who was the murderer?
