Gifted children and adults are often misunderstood. Their excitement is viewed as excessive, their high energy as hyperactivity, their persistence as nagging, their imagination as not paying attention, their passion as being disruptive, their strong emotions and sensitivity as immaturity, their creativity and self-directedness as oppositional. This resource describes these overexcitabilities and strategies for dealing with children and adults who are experiencing them, and provides essential information about Dabrowski’s Theory of Positive Disintegration. Learn practical methods for nurturing sensitivity, intensity, perfectionism, and much more.

So far, this is helpful in understanding my child. There are different types of intensity, and this explains each one.

I used to think I'm insane. Now I just think I'm intense. After spending many years and lots of money on psychotherapy, reading self-help books, and searching myself for reasons why I always felt so awkward and out-of-place, I read this book. Now I understand that many of my struggles have more to do with giftedness and the emotions that accompany it than mental illness. Not only has this book helped me understand myself better, it's helped me understand my young daughter, who likely has inherited this gift that often feels like a curse. Highly recommended for adults or parents who have not gotten the answers they were looking for by solely treating their mental health issues with psychotherapy or psychotropic drugs.
