After Justine Nolan discovers that her mother has been pretending that Justine's favorite grandmother has been dead for 10 years, she embarks on a search that takes her to Istanbul, where she discovers family secrets that go all the way back to World War II--and a chance to follow the true desires in her heart.

McMillan Palgrave

Justine Nolan is a documentary film maker who lost her beloved grandmother a decade ago--the person who was the only source of love and comfort in her life. Her own mother Deborah had always been distant and uninvolved, following her own agenda in pursuit of her career as an interior designer. But when Justine inadvertently opens a letter addressed to her mother, she discovers that not only is her grandmother Gabri alive, but that Deborah has deliberately estranged the family from her for all these years. Justine's search for her grandmother takes her to Istanbul where she begins to uncover the family's secrets that stretch all the way back to World War II. As the layers of deception peel away, Justine begins to understand a woman she never really knew…and she begins to ask questions about the true desires of her own heart.

When award-winning film maker Justine Nolan returns to her beautiful childhood home, she is intrigued by an envelope she finds in her absent mother's post. But the letter inside contains a shocking revelation. If genuine it will change everything she believes about her family's recent history, her mother and her adored grandmother, Gabriele.

This was a hard one to put down but a fast read. PG for mild sex. No bad language or gore.

Had to read for book club. 100 of the 400 pages were interesting; the story within a story, about WWII. Otherwise, pretty much a waste of time.

I had a tough time reading this book. Just wanted to get through it so I could find out what happened. But I found some of the parts quite unrealistic. I woudn't recommend it to others

Very disappointing book. I kept thinking I was reading Danielle Steel, the writing was so juvenile.

I am a big fan of this author, and I've read every one of her books. This was not only the best book of hers that I've ever read, it might just be the my favorite novel ever. The story line really touched me, and the details of her grandmother's life were so sad. I can't imagine a mother like the one the twins had to put up with either. Highly recommended!
