I grew up in Vancouver and discovered the delights of shopping and eating in Chinatown in my teens. As a poor university student, Shanghai Alley's wonderful restaurants allowed me to eat well and make new discoveries at the same time. These experiences led to a lifelong fascination with Asian cultures and cuisines. Consequently, Larry Wong's little book was a nostalgic treat. He's a good friend of Wayson Choy's (whose writing I also enjoy), and he was mentored by Jean Barman (whom I know and admire). What's not to like?
