What a different surprise! I got this as book-on-tape (12 discs). At first I was unsure about it. The story seemed vague with several seemingly unattached story lines. But I liked the main character Annika so I plodded onward and am pleased I did. I found this to be a FINE FINE story, extremely well crafted indeed. All knots were tied together, in complicated and shrewd ways. Excellent. This is a story placed in Sweden. I liked that very much, not knowing a lot about this country or their customs, it was wonderful and fresh for me. Annika is an astute newspaper reporter and mother. It was interesting to see how she balanced this hectic lifestyle...and then add in the danger, mystery and intrigue! She is researching tips on terrorism, some tied back to an event decades ago, an unsolved attack on a military base. She meets all kinds of sordid characters and finds herself in the middle of many murders. There are affairs, communistic perceptions, forests, good guys, bad guys, politicians, old fears, and charming but haunting singing angels. I am only now seeing that this is the 5th Annika book and am sorry I did not start at the beginning of the series...but intend to now. I highly recommend this book (and perhaps the series) if you like a labyrinth of subterfuge and stratagem!

NOTE: if you select this as book on tape, be aware, the narrator is a British Woman with a challenging voice and rhythm. I did not mind it so much, but my man could not stand to have it on in the car, because he said her grating voice hurt his ears and he is a big fan of books on tape, so that was not his issue...

The old radicals were interesting, but the Swedish bureaucratic subplot was boring in the extreme.
