When her investigations into Wyatt Earp, vampire hunter, and the government's use of werewolves in combat lead her to San Francisco, Kitty Norville, along with her friends, becomes a pawn in the supernatural Long Game, which has been played by vampires through the millennia.

McMillan Palgrave

Kitty Norville is back and in more trouble than ever. Her recent run-in with werewolves traumatized by the horrors of war has made her start wondering how long the US government might have been covertly using werewolves in combat. Have any famous names in our own history might have actually been supernatural? She's got suspicions about William Tecumseh Sherman. Then an interview with the right vampire puts her on the trail of Wyatt Earp, vampire hunter.

But her investigations lead her to a clue about enigmatic vampire Roman and the mysterious Long Game played by vampires through the millennia. That, plus a call for help from a powerful vampire ally in San Francisco, suddenly puts Kitty and her friends on the supernatural chessboard, pieces in dangerously active play. And Kitty Norville is never content to be a pawn. . . .

It was nice to read the next installment. Less enjoyable than previous versions because the overall plot surrounding Roman is getting really large and complex, which makes me wonder, how long and how many books before we get to the final showdown? Enjoyed the new mythology, but didn't like the final resolution and you feel a little like you were left hanging. I am looking forward to Kitty building her network, should make for interesting reading in her coming adventures.

This has become one of my favourites of this series. It is fast paced, non-stop adventure and the premise of the plot was unique.

I normally love this series, but I was disappointed in this latest novel. Most of the plot line felt forced, and I found myself caring less and less about the characters. I finally just gave up.

Read if you've found yourself really invested in these characters, but I wish I could have just stopped while I was ahead.

Aside from the interesting fact that an ancient Chinese artifact has somehow found its way to San Francisco, this was a pretty good read. I don’t know anything about Chinese mythology (except that dragons are cool), so it was really neat to get some insight into that particular genre.
