In 2002, an immense, 200-meter-thick ice shelf the size of Manhattan collapsed into the ocean off the Antarctic Peninsula, shocking scientists and raising the alarming possibility that we may be heading toward an ice-free Antarctica, last seen a million years ago. That would raise world sea levels so high that New York City would be flooded up to the level of the Statue of Liberty's shoulders. But could this really happen? Is Antarctica's surprising past a reliable guide to what may happen.

A really neat look at the technology and techniques that are being used to learn about Antartica's past. Interesting techniques include slicing the ice into thin slivers to analyze the air trapped in the bubbles. According to the video, all this information is to be used to create diagnostic models to help determine what might happen worldwide given the speed at which the glaciers are melting. Not a lot of information is revealed at this time, it needs a followup special, but they do show how the warm and cold seasons alternated, how the sediment accumulated and so on.
