I think the difference between beginners and novices is nothing more than confidence. If you copy the techniques in this book, you'll become confident rather quickly. Try at least the first 50 pages.
This book talks about techniques for oil, acrylic watercolour and pastel media. It uses broad and bold brush strokes that have a delightful result. That gave me greater freedom in creating effects that I wanted rather than following conventional techniques. An example is shown on the two pages of knife painting with nine photos showing each step. The use of impasto - thick oils as a background, and then in foreground details, certainly takes away that paint-by numbers effect that I always get. Later sections show methods for white buildings, hair, windows, wine glasses, and snow, sun, and a foaming sea. There is a lengthy chapter on portrait painting, but that seems too complicated, although flesh tone techniques were interesting. The rest of the book presented techniques for sky, clouds, landscape, and the ever-present still life.
