The world is at war. Shocking events have rattled the residents of the small town of Elderberry, Georgia, down to their worn, rationed shoes. It's 1942, and most of the men in town have either volunteered for the armed forces or are waiting for "Greetings" from Uncle Sam. For Charlie Carr, it's a trying time -- and not just because of the war. Though her head dictates loyalty to handsome corpsman Hugh Brumlow, whenever she thinks of her best friend's beau, her heart does the Jersey Bounce. And now, the entire town of Elderberry is in a tizzy.

One frosty November morning, Charlie and her fellow teachers are miffed with the school custodian "Christmas" Malone. The furnace hasn't been stoked and he hasn't emptied the wastebaskets. When he's found dead in a broom closet, it seems a heart attack may be to blame. But when beloved schoolmistress Miss Dimple Kilpatrick -- who is as dependable as gravity -- disappears, Charlie and her friend Annie Gardner begin to do some sleuthing on their own, and find that there is no shortage of suspects.

The accuracy of the author's portrayal of a southern small town during WWII triggered memories from my childhood. The plot was challenging as well, so I bought another book by Ms. Ballard, "The War In Sallie's Station", which was not owned by my library system. It was an equally enjoyable mystery of that period.
