As expected, this would be a strong story, as no one and nothing can get around the facts of Bizet's life and the controversial complexities that surrounds (and once surrounded) Carmen, as was the case with Verdi's La Traviata, both of which Tchaikovsky admired and predicted to be the biggest box office draws in the future (and, he was right on the money). On the musical end of things, first, it's both odd and interesting that no actual operatic singing was featured until the very last chapter of the film, while a good deal of the music from Carmen were drawn from the two famous orchestral suites based on the music heard throughout the opera. It's also wonderful to have the playful finale of Bizet's youthful yet immensely accomplished Symphony in C (written when he was 17) as well as a few delectable selections from Jeux d'enfants (composed in 1871) thrown in for good measure, to depict the scenes involving children at play. Musical selections from L'Arl├ęsienne have also been pressed into service, most effectively at that too, I might add. And, last if not least, all the reading material on the DVD is essential, from how the film was shot to the details of Bizet's life. Hotly recommended!
